We provide Japanese car repair for Berkeley, Emeryville, and Oakland, and we've been in the same location since 1980 - 40 years now! Toyota, Subaru, and Honda make up about 80% of our business, but we also repair some Mazda, Lexus, Acura and Nissan cars. Our certified technicians can maintain and repair your car and keep your car's warranty intact. We use the same scan tools and software as the dealerships: Techstream for Toyota, HDS for Honda, SSM4 for Subaru, IDS for Mazda, and CONSULT for Nissan.

Art's Automotive has been in business in the same location for over 40 years. We repair select makes of Japanese cars with a specialty in hybrid vehicles. When Art first opened the doors, we had only two bays, but we've grown to occupy half the block. Art owns the property so our rent is stable and much of our equipment has been paid off years ago.

I teach hybrid repair at Contra Costa College and many of my students work for dealerships. Sometimes a student will come in and teach me something new they've learned in training, which is really cool and makes me proud to see them learning and sharing. Other students aren't having such a good time.

Art's Automotive can handle ANY automotive lock, key, or immobilizer problem for far less money than a dealership, at least for the makes we repair here. Several times per day someone will assume we can't take care of a lock or key problem because another shop or a locksmith said it's something only a dealership can handle.

I'm a 26 year old woman who does not know how to change a tire/ knows relatively little about my vehicle/ etc. I'm the exact demographic of someone who gets taken advantage of at any car service business. And look, that's why I PAY professionals to do it for me. What a concept. The people at Art's have never once made me feel stupid or shameful for not knowing about my car.

They give useful, practical advice and recommendations and don't pressure me into any expensive decisions. They are patient with my questions and concerns. Thanks for being good people!

Was hoping to make an appointment, but the shop said they wouldn't even look at a '99 Miata. I was told for work to be performed on my car that it had to be '02 or newer OR that I needed to be a pre-existing client. Stupidest policy I've ever heard.

Friendly, patient, and honest team! I parroted a laundry list of tasks that.momma told me to get serviced, and Luke talked me through the requests and advised against an item he thought unnecessary. As a non-car person, it's nice to feel like I can trust these guys!

I think quite a lot of people are fooled by just how well the guys at Art's have mastered the soft sell. They'll very sympathetically tell you that your car needs a huge amount of work because they care so very much about your car. A while back I had a 17-year-old car that didn't smog and I brought it over to them to check it out. The guy called me back suggesting an $1100 part replacement.

Again on a fricking 17-year-old car that I couldn't have sold for that much at the time. I said I'd regrettably have to consign it to a pick and pull and only /then/ did he say it was possible to clean the part for $300. That still seemed a tad high, but I went with it and that totally fixed it. I remember a similar upsell attempt when I just wanted to take my car in for the routine maintenance. Should've been about $100, they tried to upsell maintenance work at $300+ "if I really cared" about my car.

Just watch out for this tactic. They'll try to guilt you into getting stuff you really don't need. If your car's in drivable shape, I think Walter over at Richardson Automotive in SF is about the only honest mechanic I've found on this planet. A hassle if you're in the East Bay, but peace of mind is worth a lot.

Arts replaced the clutch in my Toyota Matrix a while ago. After a few weeks the clutch was still making strange smells and engaging strangely. Arts redid the whole job with a different brand of parts to fix the issue, at no additional charge. Thanks!

This place deserves 0 star. I live in Hayward but still took my car to this shop for maintenance because of the good reviews. As soon as I entered the lobby, the guy working the front desk at that time greeted me while staring at my boobs even though my bf was right next to me. However, that's not the reason for this review. The reason is, my car was returned to me with four missing bolts causing the shield under the car to fall and drag on the ground while driving to Reno.

They ruined my trip! When I called them about the missing bolts, they implied that either I removed the bolts myself or they came loose while driving, and it wasn't their fault. What pissed me off even more was how they spoke to my bf with a completely different tone. I felt very disrespected. After my bf spoke to them, they offered a free oil change as a compensation.

I don't care for that free oil change. I'm not taking my car back to this shop ever again. Ladies, especially those that don't know anything about cars, I wouldn't recommend you to come here.

A great shop that really went above and beyond for me. Before I even brought my car in Jared spent 15 mins on the phone with me talking through what might be the problem and making suggestions. Then after diagnosing my 2007 Prius with a dreaded hybrid battery problem, talked me through my options and was upfront and understanding that the costs to fix were probably not worth it.

Because my car would start but not drive at this point, they were super patient and helpful while I figured out how to get it out of there and did more than they needed to helping me do so. Really appreciated his honesty and effort in educating me about what was going on with me car. Whatever car I get next, I'll make sure to bring it back here.

Incredible service. For months, I had an issue with my doors locking and unlocking erratically, and was super concerned that I had an electrical issue that would be big money to fix. Every other mechanic I called just wanted me to bring my car in at a couple hundred bucks per hour to diagnose, but when I called Art's for yet another opinion, Lute stayed on the phone with me while I explained the issue and suggested a few possible solutions I hadn't even considered. Lo and behold, his insight helped me correct the issue for FREE with a stupidly simple DIY fix. Art's forever.

We took our old car here for a checkup ahead of a road trip. As far as we can tell, the inspection went fine, but where we really appreciated this place was the staff and communication. They were polite and articulate, and the level of detail that went into the report, as well as our plans for the future of this car, was excellent. The price was also reasonable for the full inspection and oil change (~$225 total).

Art's Automotive is fantastic! I am new to the area and was concerned when my Honda Fit started having steering issues. Even though I am a brand new client, and it was a slammed busy Monday morning, Art's suggested I bring my car in for a test drive. The problem turned out to be a loose car battery, and the kind, professional mechanic at Art's identified and fixed the issue in under 10 minutes.

From the very first phone contact, through to the conclusion of business, everyone I connected with at Art's listened to my concerns, and offered thoughtful, informed responses. Service was truly outstanding, which I especially appreciate given busyness of the day as well. I will definitely be returning, and I recommend their service to anyone.

My 3rd gen prius broke so i called them and told them what needs to be done (got it diagnosed at toyota) and the guy told me and explained it to me that he cant just fix the ipm inside the inverter and he suggested that i buy the updated used inverter. I could tell that they are honest and just not about money. He helped me and emailed me the things i need in order to fix my prius

What can I possibly say about my neighborhood automotive store that has not been said already!? They are absolutely the best in business-- professional, knowledgeable, honest and good people. I have been doing business with them for the last 15 years with our 4 Japanese made cars for the whole family. We can trust Arts with our cars 100%. They give us their honest opinion and let us decide what we want serviced and when. We have never had any unexpected issues come up because these cars are kept in best shape by Art's. Best mechanics I've ever had. I've taken my last two cars (Subarus) here for everything that needs doing. The guys here are super friendly, efficient, and professional and communicate the whole way though process. As long as I keep buying japanese imports, I'll be taking my cars to Arts!

A great place to have your car serviced. They've taken care of my Prius for 10 years and before that my Honda Accord. They are professional, knowledgable, attentive and available. Talk about availability: Yesterday, I called at 4pm (it was Friday afternoon) about a problem with my trunk latch that kept setting off my door open alert--a constant beep as soon as I started driving. Chris said come on over, we'll take a look at it and see what we can do. Eureka--he found the remains of a balloon that had popped in the trunk and was lodged within the latch catch. Problem solved in 5 minutes. Highly recommended for balloons and all other automotive services!

Oh, these guys. I brought in my car to have them give it the once-over before driving it to Tahoe. After an hour or so, they called me to come pick it up, and then the lot of them stood around the counter explaining that my car was simply oh-so-ruuuuusty and oooooold, and that I simply musssssn't drive it One. Foot. Further. All while they stood around shaking their precious heads, stroking their little beards and clucking their little tongues.

So I took it back to my old mechanic (Roger and Co. at Berkeley auto service) who gave it the care it needed, like the rock stars they are. Even though I gave up the Volkswagen ghost and now drive Toyotas, my shop will not be Art's but will be my old one. Seriously guys, take up needlepoint.

My 2000 Prius was recently relieved of its catalytic converter, and because the vehicle was going on 21 years old, a $2000-$3000 repair didn't make sense. So I purchased a used 2013 Prius, but after the upset of getting ripped off once, I didn't want to leave it in my driveway for even a single night without an anti-theft device--so I called Art's to schedule the work, knowing they already have the things in stock and that I wouldn't have to wait for an Amazon delivery.

When I described my situation to the guy who answered the phone--I think his name is Jeff--he told me I actually don't need the CAT device. I was so surprised I asked him to repeat himself. There was no misunderstanding. Jeff said there are lots of hoses, etc. covering the catalytic converters for Prius model years 2010-2013: that the CC's are so difficult to get to, thieves don't even try.

In other words, he turned away a $350 job I would have happily paid for because the car wouldn't actually be an attractive target. I was floored, but only briefly--this place has a stellar and well-earned reputation for its honesty. I'll be taking my new-used car here for all future repairs. Thanks guys! Big appreciation.

This place is so competent, helpful, and efficient that they were calling my insurance company and getting information from them before my insurance company even updated me! Definitely got the process moving more quickly than my insurance company would have on their own. and they really know what you're talking about. My other mechanic didn't really understand hybrid vehicles and missed something crucial. Art's figured it out right away and also helped me better understand how to maintain my car going forward. So glad to have found them! Only coming back here from now on.

This review is long overdue. I've been taking my cars to Art's for well over 10 years now and I can't imagine going anywhere else! Customer Service is consistently best of the best - they always take the time to explain things in easy-to-understand detail. I can always rely on them to give me smart advice and recommendations. There are never any surprises, and the work is done right the first time. These guys are awesome - they go above and beyond each and every time!
