ShadeTree Automotive in White Salmon and their sister company, GreenTree Automotive in Hood River are my "go to" auto service providers. I appreciate that they don't talk down to their customers, they explain their recommendations, and they are honest.

Last summer my radiator blew out and I was stranded a long ways away from home on a late friday afternoon. You can imagine what kind of mess this created for me. After doing some quick google research, and making a phone call to these guys, I decided to have my car towed to these folks. I chose this shop because I felt very confident in just the initial conversation I had with the owner.

When I got there (shortly before closing on a friday) I was kindly greeted by the owner. He had one of his mechanics evaluate my situation within minutes. I kid you not, he had parts ordered before I even left the place not even 30 minutes later. As you could probably imagine, I was extremely nervous it was going to take forever to get the parts and get it running again.

I believe it was either the following Monday, late afternoon, or early Tuesday morning when I got the call it was finished. The amount of labor it took, the hourly labor charge, and the cost of the parts were all extremely reasonable. Their efficiency, respectfulness, and price hands down deserves 5 stars. I'd give them 6/5 if I could. Also, since then, I have run my car with a full load, in high heat, with the A/C roaring, at high elevation, and the radiator is still keeping things cool! White Salmon is lucky to have you guys. Thanks again!

Andy and his crew are honest, easy to work with and great mechanics. They replaced an axle for our forester and went the extra mile to make sure we had our vehicle performing optimally. Thanks guys! We will be coming here from now on.

I found I was over diagnosed and overpriced. I second Jo S, as the owner Andy is not a pleasure to deal with, all for what I feel is average knowledge around Subaru's. Certainly won't be back, and won't recommend the place. Turbo vehicles he seems not to want to deal with, and I was not impressed by his repetitive doomsday diagnosis. Anybody can fix it right if they fix everything, but if you want a mechanic that only fixes what needs fixed, I recommend Grey's in The Dalles.

If you have Subaru specific needs, the guys at SSI (superior soobie and import) in Portland are incredibly helpful. They confirmed my turbo wasn't actually failed, but rebuilt it at my request. They also gave me several possible causes of my turbo noise, including what ended up being a clogged in line oil strainer installed at the factory. As someone who can't throw money at an engine rebuild, I appreciate a shop that doesn't jump to conclusions.

I will be back in this engine soon to upgrade the pistons, but I'll do it with a shop that bothered to take the time and explain what my options are. I'm sure there's plenty of Subaru work in the Gorge to keep Andy busy, and I'm sure there's plenty of customers who can afford his methods; I'm not one of them.

Andy is amazing. He towed us from a gravel service road, did a full diagnosis and test on the car, and then towed us 180 miles home. He's hard working, cheerful, and no-nonsense. I'd go back in a flash if I had car trouble, or just for an oil change.

We've been bringing our cars here for years. I've never once felt like I've been jerked around or ripped off. They are super accommodating and generally number one

In the Gorge, Subarus are common for a reason, and Shadetree is one of the benefits of living in White Salmon. Knowing that honest and highly competent Subaru specialists who can perform dealer-level (or better) routine maintenance are located within walking distance gave us the confidence to purchase a new Subaru without the hassle of wasting a day or two taking it to The Dalles or Portland every six months. Andy also facilitated a private sale of winter rims with another loyal customer. A quality small business in a quality small community. Can't recommend highly enough.

I have been doing business with Shadetree and Greentree Automotive for nearly 20 years. This team of experts has patiently inspected any used car I have ever been interested in buying. Andy, Sean and the whole crew have a long track record of serving me with integrity and excellent customer service. These good people are non-nonsense, sincere, hard working, straight shooters who will diagnose, bid and repair honestly. I have recommended them to countless friends, all of whom have been happy with their work. I won't go to any other mechanic shop, anywhere, for work on any of my cars.

Hit a rock in my Prius on the old Columbia River Highway while visiting from out of town. Car was making terrible sounds. These great guys took a careful look, re-attached the plastic that was dragging after the impact, and reassured me that nothing was wrong -- for no charge! Thank you!

I had trouble with my headlights while visiting Hood River. Called Sean on Saturday morning and he said to bring the car in. He was able to attend to my vehicle immediately and diagnose the problem--burned out light bulbs. All quickly said and done and I was on my way. Thanks Sean.

Andy, and Shade Tree Automotive are a top notch automotive repair shop specializing in Subaru vehicles. That being said, Andy has worked on nearly every vehicle I have owned at one time or another, including a Subaru Legacy, a Ford Escape, an Expedition and an F150, and my Volkswagen TDI. As others have said, Andy is a straight shooter. He will listen to your description of the issue, inspect your vehicle and provide a professional diagnosis of the problem.

He will clearly explain what has to be done to get you back on the road, and provide insight and options on how to get that work done with minimal cost and downtime. His prices are fair, and the work he and his crew perform is exemplary. I have been utilizing Shade Tree Automotive since Andy started out in his garage next to his house, somewhere around 15 years ago. In my opinion, there is no other mechanic anywhere in the Gorge that can top Shade Tree Automotive, and Andy continues to get my business when I need automotive repair.

Negative review response by Kristi Ann I will try and keep this short, you state charges were close to $100 and I am ripping you off your bill was $64.20 with tax was that from the start still is. You did not pay this bill; you removed your car after hours without paying your bill. I still have your key to prove it. When you dropped your car it had a list of problems first was a rattling noise that you could not direct us to any location other than it had a new noise from the various other noises it has, we faced the same issue, your van is very old and neglected even abused. Has many noises, after the first road test with just one person we sent it out with two employees to help isolate the worst noise it had, then raised it in the air and spent another 15 to 20 minute driving and listening with more than one person assisting, it has enough issues we were trying to be not only thorough but accurate.

The worst of your noise is rubber coupler often called a rag joint in the front drive line from transfer case to front diff the part is splintered cracked and coming apart it is an expensive part and there's a couple hours labor to replace it. At this point my crew was into this part of your concerns at least an hour if not more. Next the AC not working, it had no Freon, it was partially charged and inspected for gross leaks and checked for operation.

You declined any work here so we then recovered the Freon charged. I am not sure if any shop will perform any sort of a recharge and diagnostics on an AC system for less than $100 going rates on a recharge often $130 to $150 back to the total diagnostic fee of $60 for all of your concerns. We start at $85 for an AC evacuate and recharge which is still less than anyone else.

The stalling/ dying issue was addressed without a lot of time mainly because we have a skilled Toyota tech that did in fact come to a fairly solid answer faster than most would but there was possibly 20 to 30 minutes devoted to pricing and estimate along with that very few shops will even look at a performance issue on something as old as your car for less than $150 regardless of what is found back to the total charge for all diagnostics of $60 Then the general inspection of its condition and needs this was not a complex procedure but again 20 to 30 minutes was devoted to this along with time for locating and pricing of parts for the service work.

You will notice the repair order states many items/parts show sever neglect your coolant looks horrible and worse, oil leaking from areas soaking plugs wires distributor cap mind you this is a van we didn't just pop your hood and condemn everything in the parking with two minutes time a lot much more time was involved in checking fluids levels and conditions. Attached is the actual invoice with ball park prices for these repairs and service, you were very adamant about having no work done by us because you have a friend in Portland who will do this work much cheaper than us.

That's great you should have started there instead of wasting our time. We devote many hours of free time to our customers the number is huge. Our customers want to develop a relationship with us, respect our time, and appreciate what we do for them. From the start you had no desire to be a customer you just wanted something for free a lot for free. You have paid nothing for our services and have in fact broken the law by removing your car without payment for our time and efforts.

These guys are honest and fair, fixed me up quick and correct. No problems and didn't get charged for things that didn't need to be done. Recommend them over any other shop.

Third time taking my car here. Shade Tree is the only mechanic in Hood River or The Dalles that has exceeded my expectations EVERY time in both price and performance. This last time, my locks were freezing up (old car) and the gas door was locked shut. He not only loosened the locks and freed the gas door, but then.didn't charge me as he considered it a quick fix. I tried to give him another piece of work, but he said it was out of his scope of expertise and referred me to a specialist. Not many mechanics will do that!

Sean at Greentree and Andy at Shadetree are where you want to take your Subarus. These guys are old school honest, great mechanics, and they work hard for your repeat business. All three of our Subarus are under their care including fluid changes. These guys are the real deal.

Before I started going to Shadetree Automotive in White Salmon and Greentree Automotive in Hood River, I'd kept hearing about this guy named Andy Miller. He's got a great reputation. Now I know why. He's good. I'd heard it said that he's not cheap, but he's the best value in town. Reminds me of the saying, "I'm too poor to be cheap." He's really good about laying out the options. I highly recommend either location. They both have Andy standing behind the repair.
