Very good auto repair advice and help. It is an independent repair shop that has been in Evanston for a long time because they are honest and do good work.

Doc Able's makes me feel so comfortable going to the mechanic! They have incredible customer service, and they always take the time to explain exactly what the issue is and how they will fix it. They make sure to go over all the pricing with you before they do anything, so there are no surprise charges. I would recommend Doc Able's to anyone in need of a trustworthy and helpful mechanic

My wife's truck was making a terrible noise so I took it to Doc Able's for a check up. I've got enough working knowledge of cars to not be fooled by someone saying I need a complete engine rebuild, but I'm not a mechanic. They gave me a diagnosis that was within what I basically expected. They did the work and guaranteed their parts and service for a year, which I appreciate.

Everything they fixed is functional and I don't feel like they tried to take me to the cleaners. The truck, however, is in its teenage years so I expect it to be petulant and irritating. Fortunately, Doc Able's will fix it correctly at a reasonable price. I have to admit, when it gets to 18 this truck either needs to get a job or go to college because I'm about done with replacing things.

This place is great. Prices, service and customer service is top notch especially for a mechanic shop. Love these guys, way to go Doc.

Brought my 2007 VW New Bettle in for routine maintenance to address the glowing engine light and replace the cigarette lighter power supply. Aside from that, the car ran exceptionally well. I picked up the car the next day but unfortunately, they forgot to fix the cigarette lighter which necessitated a return the next day. In the meantime, I noticed the engine light was still on.

To make a long story short, I had to bring the car back four consecutive times, and each visit to Doc Ables Auto Clinic rendered the car progressively worse. Following the last visit, the car was running so bad (uncontrollably revving high and low, creating a safety risk), I didn't even make it home. Following this fiasco, the owner, Pete, provided a partial refund, but only after some mental arm wrestling, but refused to fix the problem caused by their shop. Instead, he recommended I bring the car to City Volkswagen of Evanston, (which fortunately is across the street from Doc's).

City Volkswagen determined that putting my car back in its original working order will cost $1000. I have no idea how my car was made inoperable by Doc Ables Auto Clinic but believe they can be redeemed by taking responsibility for the errors they made. This can be accomplished by simply covering the added expenses to put the car back in working order, no more and no less. Is this too much to ask for?

I went in because I had a flat tire. The man at the front desk was rude. He wouldn't even look me In my face when he spoke to me. He was very short with me and didn't offer any advice. I would never come back. Work on your customer service.

Dropped prius off before a trip for a simple oil change, pick up next day and less than a mile away, car's emergency system activates and doesn't allow me to drive.to my nursing class.when I'm already stressed for time. Doc Ables refused to take responsibility so had to call Warrens for a tow, pay for an uber and then a new $200 bill. Turns out a leaf had been shoved up and around during the oil change triggering the alarm. Doc Ables refused to take responsibility, never apologized and finally relented to a refund.

Except that the refund was actually a double charge that still hasn't refunded to my account. I wasted three days needing to go BACK TWICE to Doc Ables for them to wrongly charge my card and then refund properly (right before Labor Day Weekend so no idea when my money should arrive even though they said "should be immediate"), my oil change took $450 out of my account right before my trip.

They never apologized to me. Pete suuuuuuucks at customer service. Oh, and when my husband went in to talk to him, he did apologize TO HIM, not ME, the owner of the car, the person whose money was drained and days off/class sabotaged by sloppy work. Pretty sexist. -a very stressed nursing student whose chill trip and precious money was sabotaged by Doc Ables during a pandemic

I have been going to this shop for a couple years. Unfortunately I discovered that they were charging me for work that they didn't actually perform. In the thousands of dollars nonetheless. These are not trust worthy people. I wouldn't have left them any stars if I were able to post my grievance without it. DO NOT TSKE YOUR CAR TO THIS SHOP! They need to be run out of town.

I typically don't leave reviews but I felt like this was necessary. I gave them 2 stars because they did a good job on my cars oil change when I took it there a couple of times. If you want to get anything replaced or fix. DO NOT TAKE YOUR CAR HERE. They are over priced and basically don't fix the issue. My car check engine light came on and needed an O2 sensor changed and they did that.

Then my check engine light came on again. They said it was a faulty sensor. They fixed it. My check engine light has come on for the 3rd time and I took it elsewhere to have them tell me it's the same issue. Clearly it was never fixed and when I called PETE was rude and wanted me to bring my car back in and would not give me any money back. Why would I take my car in for a third time! Shouldn't it be fixed the first time? Just do your research before you take your car here. That's where I failed.

I just came in on a whim after I was tired of my suv barking at me to add air. Guy dropped everything and put air in my tires and wouldn't charge. I know this is small, but I really appreciated the gesture. I took some time and read the bad reviews. A lot of them are bogus. Guy mad because he didn't know what a synthetic oil change was. I'll be coming back

A mechanic at a BMW dealership told us that there was an oil leak in our 2014 X3, and quoted us nearly $900 to fix it. We took the car to Doc Ables and just got off the phone with Pete, who let us know - to our surprise - that there isn't a leak at all! It was just a question of some messy work near the oil filter. He saved us $900 and was SO polite and efficient. So happy we found this place - we'll definitely be bringing our car here for any issues in the future. Thank you, Pete!

Background: I have been bringing my car to Doc Able's for about 1.5 years now. The service has been good at a reasonable price. Except for one negative experience, which is enough for me to take my business elsewhere. See below. 4 months ago, I brought my in car for an oil change and other routine maintenance. As part of the maintenance, Doc Able reattached the plastic engine cover on the bottom right side of the car.

They were gracious enough to do this as a complimentary service, as it is a simple fix. Last week, the right bottom engine cover came back off and we brought it in to have it reattached. It took them about 15 minutes to reattach the engine cover with a couple of plastic ties, for which they charged us $60. This seemed a little steep, so I brought in the receipt from the time they serviced us to show them.

I was told that I "probably hit something else again" causing the engine cover to come back off. While this is possible, it seems unlikely that the same piece would come off again if it were properly fixed. When I asked why it cost $28 the first time and $60 the second time, I was told "because it took longer". Again, while this may be true, I would hope that: 1) they would stand by the quality of their fix and, 2) they would not gouge a repeat customer for a trivial fix. Unfortunately neither was the case for Doc Able's, and thus I will not be returning.

I just called them.ive been looking around at autobody shops to get the best service and value to get my car mirror fixed. I also have other work to get done to the car that I've also been given quotes for.and I just recently got all of the money to get it done. When I called, Pete was incredibly rude and all I asked about was the cheap mirror fix. Felt so put off I didn't even go into the 1300 dollars of estimated damage I have in this scratch on my car. I will take his advice and go to another shop.for all estimated 1500 dollars worth of damage. They don't need the money with their rudeness. Don't go here.

Was in a pinch to change oil and couldn't make it to my usual mechanic who charges me $60 flat, with tax and fees for a synthetic oil change. Went in to Doc Able asking for a price of a full synthetic oil change and I was given the price of $69 plus tax/fees by Pete. Then, I pulled up a $10 off synthetic coupon from their website only to be told that the "the price he gave me already includes the coupon" and that "they give the coupon price to everyone".

I said the whole point of coupons is to get a discount of posted rates. When I asked if he has the $69 price posted anywhere he started getting very defensive and told me to go to my mechanic (I told him earlier that I normally go to someone else). The whole time I was there, Pete barely made any eye contact, looked down on me while talking with an annoyed voice, was shuffling through paperwork and working on his computer not paying much attention. What's worse, is that he's probably the shop owner or manager and complaining to anyone wouldn't help a bit.

What a shame, I can only imagine how Pete talks to his mechanics, if this is how he talks to potential customers! I don't know where some of these positive reviews came from here, but this is one of the worst customer service experiences I've had within the last couple of years! If you want to be treated fairly and with respect - DON'T come to Doc Able!

Courteous service. Informative. Pete is my go-to guy for auto maintenance. I have been using Dic Able's for about three years now, mostly for oil changes, but have also purchased tires there. I find them knowledgeable and helpful, with reasonable prices. Highly recommended.

I have been going to location for years for my oil changes so I just got a 2015 Nissan Rouge so this was my first oil change on this car so he tell me my oil change will be 70.00. My last car was a 2004 so I was like WHAT so I told him just to put my car down so I went to Jiffy lube and, they told my the same price but, he explained to me why it was that much and, that I won't have to have another one for a year. Basicily Doc Able have lost a loyal customer because the guy at the front desk didn't take 10 minutes to explain.

Doc Ables is my go to place when my car has problems. I found it when I first moved to evanston and I still go now that I live in Skokie. Pete, the owner is a great guy and remembers you when you come back. Their prices I feel are comparable to most places but the work you get done is great and fast. If you need a mechanic go to Doc Able's Auto Clinic

I feel Pete of Doc Ables genuinely wants to provide great service and weight this with my desire to genuinely avoid a towing charge and unnecessary repairs. Over my years I've changed over two dozen tires on my and my family's car. Never has a lug (the bolts in the center of the wheels where the lug nuts go) broken off. Today while attempting to change the tire on my car, not one, but two of the four lugs snapped off.

The last time this wheel was off (as well as the drivers rear side) was at Doc Ables. Since I've driven to northern MN and back, twice. Thankfully today the car was parked on a city street not some highway. The first sign of amiss after my one and only paid visit to Doc Abels was that the hand brake (the car is a stick shift) was nearly impossible to lift more than the first notch to engage after the rear brakes were adjusted.

The adjustment was too tight imo. Pete did look at the car and verbally attempted to convince me it was proper. Today talking w Pete via phone about how to tow and repair I felt put off. He did call back and left left his name and phone on the message, but not the requested price estimate I requested. I towed and repaired elsewhere. On Facebook I see frequent requests for new mechanics at Doc Ables.

Over torqued lug nuts to me is just as bad as loose lug nuts but basic mechanic stuff. I get the feeling that Docs is on the cheap with his help. At the age of 50+ I'm willing to pay a higher price for auto repair more so for convenience and piece of mind. Ideally a place with well-paid mechanics possibly union if exists.

Pete, The bottom line is you did not prioritize the lowest cost solution to the issue. You allegedly put in a new starter, the highest cost solution, and then moved on to the lowest cost solution, a belt. An ethical and honest shop would have had the best interests of their customers in mind which is not the case in this instance. Additionally, when you followed me out of the store you said "you told me to put in a new starter" which is simply a complete lie.

I asked you to determine why my truck was not starting and to provide a quote on the solution. The solution was a relatively low cost belt, which I could have replaced myself. It's not the responsibility of the customer to shoulder the financial burden of your shop making a diagnostic mistake and rushing to put in an unnecessary but relatively expensive part when a belt replacement would have sufficed.

Your mistake, your loss. Further, it's standard to ask for the original part back in instances such as this. Your excuses for not having the original part are your own. And finally, your rates are simply astronomical relative to market rates. It's not hard to launch a standard search engine and query "How Much Does a Starter Replacement Cost?" and receive the following top result: "The average cost for a Ford Explorer Starter Replacement is between $222 and $302.

Labor costs are estimated between $70 and $89 while parts are priced between $152 and $213. Estimate does not include taxes and fees." Your charge was nearly 88.7% greater than the lowest average cost and 38.7% over the highest average cost. I could continue but there's no point. The rest of your wall of text is irrelevant to the substance of the issue, which is: the truck did not need a new starter, it needed a belt replacement.

You made a mistake and you're attempting to offload the financial consequences of the mistake onto your customer. It's not going to happen. See Lee M.'s from Evanston recent review as well. This appears to be a pattern. Zack

The best service. I was there to to visit my son's college and had a nail in my tire that was causing a slow leak. They greeted all of us and had us in and back out on the road. I recommend this shop to locals and travelers. Great, honest, hospitable people in this shop. They treat you like people and not like another dollar.

I have a 2008 Nissan Rogue and I went to Doc Able's to get my brakes looked at and receive an estimate for the work. Being on a budget, I did not want to spend a crazy amount for brakes at my dealer. While scheduling this work, I inquired about vacuuming my car and was told they didn't have the equipment to do so. This was not a problem for me since this was a value-add and certainly not that important.

I agreed to have the work done and when I picked up my car, I learned that not only did they vacuum my car, the interior got a really nice carpet makeover. Not sure how they did this, but it looks great inside and more importantly (cause I'm not vain) my brakes work. I am very happy with the service and them going the extra mile. I would definitely have them do other work as well.

After trying out what feels like a million different repair shops in the Chicagoland area, I think I finally found a place I can trust. I have now taken my Audi A4 to Doc Able's a few times since they've changed ownership. some differences that I've noticed: 1) Friendlier service at the counter. 2) The service was done in a timelier manner. 3) The owner called me a week later to see how the car was running!

I even asked Pete, the owner, if they could use particular parts that they don't typically carry or order for Audis and he had absolutely no problem doing so. and it didn't slow down the process at all! I'll happily continue to take my car to a place where the owner proactively meets and services customers. Pete is a standup guy and the veteran technician is very reliable.

I worked at an auto repair shop for 4+ years, and I have taken my car to over a dozen shops in the area, so believe me, I am aware of all of the crooked repair shop owners. Pete is NOT that guy. Get your service done local and avoid dealerships.

These people are cool. Both my teenage kids take their cars there (Jeep Wrangler & Suzuki Samarai) and even though they are kids - the staff are always fair and nice to them. The work itself has always been good. Thanks Doc Ables!
