Ben's Japanese Auto Clinic

We've been going to Ben and now his son Sean for years. Very thorough, very skilled with all Japanese models. Really thorough and not too expensive. No bad experiences.

This review is long overdue. There are so many times when Ben has gone above and beyond on my little Subaru. When I leave his shop, it's not just that my car is repaired, it's that my faith in humanity is also restored. I first came to Ben around 2016. After doing many hours of research around town, getting quotes on years worth of (horrible) work I had done at TNA Auto Repair on MLK Blvd, I realized that I could have saved thousands of dollars in a five year period if I had gone to Ben's Japanese Auto. Ben's commitment to integrity is a rarity in Portland as far as car mechanics go, which most love to screw people who don't know a lick about cars (like me). This is not the case with Ben. He is a local hero.

They were able to work me into their schedule and found the issue which a different mechanic shop couldn't find. Excellent communication, great customer service and I found the pricing fair. I'm new to the area and am happy to have found a good mechanic.

They did great work on my car, and they found some issues with my car that other mechanics failed to find. Owner is friendly and knowledgeable. Great shop!

I've been here about 4 times and have my vehicle repaired with no issue. I came in for an oil change yesterday, which they asked me to leave my car. I said no problem I proceeded to remove some napkins that were on my seat because it's Covid and I didn't want any employees touching them. I head to the office to fill out my paperwork and throw the napkins in the garbage.

I get a call to come pick my car up as it's done. I have a Starbucks drink in my hand that is empty. I head to the office proceed to the trash and throw my Starbucks drink away. "The owner then says to me do you just bring all your garbage here to throw away In my garbage"? I replied it's trash so I throw it in the trash, would you like me to take it out?

He then grunts with an upset look. At this time I'm perplexed due to the fact that I'm a paying customer not just some random person off the street and I'm throwing away a Starbucks cup. I'm sorry I threw my trash away in your garbage can Mr. Ben but you did a great job making your customer feel unwanted. God bless you!

Ben's did a fantastic job. And they kept all the parts to show me why things needed repair. Very prompt, responsive, professional. Will be going to Ben's for all auto needs.

Wow I was so grateful for Ben. I am from the coast and had to pickup family at Pdx. After going to target my car sounding very bad. I was worried my car would not be able to make it back home. I found his shop online and prayed he had a key drop as I had to rent a car and find someone who could fix my car. Ben answers the phone after hours and came to my rescue picking up my keys and locked up my car. Turned out my catalytic converter was cut out. Ben took care of me and worked with my insurance. I can not explain how thankful I am for his work and kindness. Knowledgeable, fast quality work.

I have been bringing my 99 4Runner here since 2016. They are always very honest and thorough when repairs are needed. I highly recommend them.

I'm only giving them 5 stars because I can't give them more. My truck started acting up and I pulled off the freeway and right away saw the sign for a Japanese auto clinic and since it was early in the morning I left a note for them on their door and got a ride into work. Within about an hour they called me and got my truck right in and called me back to tell me what was wrong with it.

They started working on it right away and the next day it was better than ever. I highly recommend Ben's Japanese Auto Clinic, the only place I'll be going for automotive work from now on.

I cannot say enough good things about this place. They got my car in and repaired on super short notice. They found many items which had been overlooked by my previous mechanic. I am bringing both of our CRVs here from now on. Thanks Shawn and Ben!

I found my battery to be dead early morning. Got a jump start, electrical system checkup and replacement battery the same morning. They do not sell cheap aftermarket batteries and I am very pleased with their replacement battery brand. I am very satisfied with their attention to quality and overall service.

I work in the automotive industry and take my personal vehicles to Ben's and refer quite a few of my customers to them as well. They are always quick and have done simple things like recharging my AC to replacing the transmission on one of our older vehicles. They prices are very fair and they know these cars inside and out. It is a great feeling when you stumble on to a really good thing. Because of Covid, this past July, I decided to drive rather than fly to the east coast. On the fly, we purchased a 2007 Honda Pilot with 160,000 miles on it (and a pop up camper to tow behind the Pilot) and looked for a mechanic to check out our vehicle/gamble before leaving. I had never been to Ben's Japanese Auto Clinic before.

I simply looked for someone nearby. It's always a risk when you take your car to someone new but I have been driving for 50 years and generally trust my instincts. My initial discussion with Ben gave me confidence. He knew the Pilot inside and out and was as comprehensive in his assessment of the readiness of the vehicle for a 10,000 mile trip as anyone might be for their own kid.

The car needed work and he walked me through everything that had to be done, showed me exactly what he wanted to do and why and provided an estimate for all work. He also broke out repairs that had to be done immediately and service that could be delayed. We were 100 percent happy with the work performed, the communication and the cost - which was within the estimate Ben had provided.

We are back from our trip. We put more than 11,000 miles on the car between leaving in July and returning in early October, 2020. The car performed flawlessly and got us home safe and sound. Parking is tight, this is a small shop very easy miss if your not careful. It's an old style machinic shop, nothing fancy but the team there was very nice. I found them online and after checking out their website decided to give them a call. I definitely think I was lucky to find this shop. I don't know much about cars and found it hard to describe what I ne fed done.

But Sean (I think that was his name) was patient and took time to help me talk trough it. He suggested a same day appointment. I came in he went over what I needed provided a fair price and was upfront about what parts of need, how much they'd cost and where he'd get them. He took time to outline the process and I made a follow up appointment for the repairs.

On the day of my next appointment I dropped my car off at 8am expecting to get it back in the afternoon but I had a call before 10 telling me my car was done! When I'd left they had 3 cars they were working on and they got all done super fast. They take visa, MasterCard, discover and amex gpay and apple pay at time of my appointment. Everyone there was masked and they had sanitizer out. I'm definitely going back. THANKS BEN'S JAPANESE AUTO CLINIC FOR MAKING EVERYTHING SO SIMPLE.

I have been bringing my cars to Ben for years. He is always professional, fair, and quick to respond to my car needs. I have been and will continue to bring my cars to him and tell others about his great service.

I have a 1984 Nissan pickup truck that had a carburetor problem that prevented me from using the truck. A different garage tried a couple of times to fix it without success. I took the truck to Ben's, and it was repaired on the first visit. Thanks Ben, and son, and staff for having the skill to do a quality job.

I saw the reviewer who wrote that Ben's charges unreasonable high prices, and I had to write my own review. That girl needs to do some research, as she could not be more WRONG. I have taken both our cars to Ben for years, and I am extremely happy with the work he does and the very reasonable prices charged. I know I am dealing with an honest and conscientious business.

I went there to get my van diagnose and the service was not what I expected. I was recommended here by a friend. The son Sean was very rude and not helpful at all. He was very annoyed with me asking him questions to get better clarification on what needed to be fixed. This shop charges unreasonable high price.

When the timing belt on my old lexus broke and seriously damaged the engine, I called nearly a dozen mechanics who didn't want to take on the job before I found Ben's. It seems like he enjoys cars and is excited about fixing them. We took our car to Ben's for other things over the years and they've always been great. The whole team there was always nice to us. The prices are fair and reasonable and they stand behind their work.

Ben and Sean have taken excellent care of all of my vehicles over the last 10 years. Very professional and my cars run smoothly all of the time.

Ben always provides really honest and affordable prices. He replaced the engine on my car well over a year ago and it's been running great every since. Now I go to him for everything.

Finally, an honest, talented, AND available mechanic in NE Portland. Had an oil leak in my Tacoma and called 10 shops where the average wait was up to 4 days to even see the truck. The oil leak did not care about their wait times or high prices. It was going to leak as much as it could. Suddenly, I found Ben's and it was like a miracle. He could see me.

That day. Within 20 minutes. Ben is great. He will shake your hand. He will tell you exactly what the issue is on your car. And he will even show it to you so you understand. I had my truck in and out before other shops would ever have even taken a look. Best of all, these guys know their Toyotas. Enough said. Don't be startled if they find something else wrong.

Just ask how much it will be, if you can afford it in your budget, you should probably do it. These guys want your car to live as long as possible. Don't ignore their experience. Plus, their prices are extremely reasonable for such talent. Anyways, great time overall on my part and I feel a lot more confident knowing my truck is going to keep going for a long time. I was on a road trip and my tire pressure light on my Lexus went on.they saw a nail immediately and fixed my tire with in 20 minutes so I could be back on the road. They also recommended that I get new tires soon, but didn't press me into that. Their price was super fair. Very helpful and kind.

Ben's is always my first stop for auto repairs. They give you honest information and you can trust them not to try to upsell you on repairs you don't need. I don't need my car to be pretty, but I need it to be safe to drive. I can't say enough how I appreciate the work they do.

This place was kind enough to help me out with an odd situation of 3 out of 4 actuators going bad in my 2014 4Runner. They assisted me in locating the correct parts needed and flawlessly installed them quickly and at a fair price. They were honest, efficient, nice to chat with and ready to help out any way they can. THIS is why you always support small business, because they truly care. I will be taking my vehicle to them for all repairs from this point forward.

We are longtime (16 years) customers of Bens auto. Since day one, Ben has been completely honest, caring and extremely knowledgeable about fixing our cars. All you have to do is tell him what kind of sound the car makes and he knows exactly what the problem is. We live in S.W. Portland, and drive all the way over to Bens. The wealth of knowledge Ben and Sean have about cars is extensive. We have referred and will continue to refer our friends to the best auto maintenance shop in the city.

I used to thing that Bens was a good place to get my car going great but now not so much. I took my Acura RSX in because of a bad gas smell, Ben said they repaired the fuel pump and gasket leak and now the car was safe. $220.00 The next day the smell returned but worse, I took the car back because obviously something was overlooked. Ben now claims the fuel pump is bad and wants another 440.00 for something that was supposedly already fixed.

This place is great! They are honest and thorough. Every time I have taken my car in and a part needed replacement, they saved the old part to show me. Prices are extremely fair and much lower than dealerships. I saved over $100 on my 30k mile checkup alone! Great service, friendly staff - you must check it out! Easy to get to as well, so if you need to drop your car off, you just have to walk a few blocks to get to the Red MAX Line!
